Surya Tattva: Radiant Intelligence of the Self
A 2-hour immersion | 8 February 9:30am
Fang Studio, 195 Pearl’s Hill Terrace
An exploration of the widely popularised Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) beyond a purely physical, postural practice.
In modern postural yoga, Surya Namaskar is often practised as a dynamic sequence that links breath with bodily forms. Yet beneath its familiar shapes lies a much richer intention. Do we truly know its origins and purpose?
Long before modern postural yoga systems adopted Surya Namaskar, invocations to the Sun were already cherished daily rituals in households across the Indian subcontinent. The Sun was honoured not through movement alone, but through prayer, reverence, and simple acts of devotion.
One of the most intimate and enduring of these practices is Surya Arghya — the offering of water to the rising Sun. This ritual symbolises gratitude, purification, and an attunement to divine intelligence and cosmic order.
It is only in relatively recent history — around the early 17th century onwards — that Surya Namaskar was shaped into a physical exercise, influenced by India’s physical and moral strength revival. While forms evolve with time, this does not dilute the essence of the practice.
At its heart, Surya Namaskar has always been an invocation of strength, courage, clarity, rhythm, and purpose — qualities that mirror the Sun’s principle itself.
To truly learn and cherish the intention behind Surya Namaskar, and to allow the practice to blossom into something harmonious for the body, mind, and spirit, we should retrace and honour its cultural roots, symbolic meanings, and energetic qualities.
Otherwise, we risk reducing Surya Namaskar to mere physical exercise, stripping away the life essence of its spiritual teachings.
Awaken this Radiant Intelligence through Surya Tattva.
In Surya Tattva immersion, we will explore:
An introduction to Surya and his role in yogic and Vedic cosmology
The symbolism of the Sun across ancient cultures and traditions
Surya Namaskar as a devotional invocation
Surya Namaskar as a postural and embodied practice
Alongside our time of study and movement, we will enjoy a radiant cup of Dong Ding, a classic Taiwanese oolong traditionally crafted through sun-withering, controlled oxidation, rolling, and final baking. Its tasting profile offers resonant depth and grounding warmth, lovingly prepared by tea practitioner Kenny from Fang Studio.
